About the Position: This position is organizationally assigned to Maternal-Child-Infant Nursing, Directorate of Nursing Services, of a Defense Health Agency Medical Treatment Facility. The Mother Baby Unit (4KL) is responsible for rendering highly specialized antepartum and postpartum care to the obstetrical patient and newborn.

Duties

Help
  • Provides care to the routine obstetrical patient and infant.
  • This care includes but is not limited to medical/surgical conditions such as post-operative cesarean sections, vaginal repairs, tubal ligations, diabetes, stable pre-term labor, and pregnancy induced hypertension.
  • Utilizes advanced nursing assessment skills to identify difficult patient care problems, to formulate complex plans to meet patient care needs, and to continually revise goals and objectives according to changes in maternal/fetal/newborn status.
  • Provides highly specialized nursing care to the complicated and routine postpartum obstetrical patient and newborn.
  • Promotes staff competency and efficiency in emergent situations through formal and informal classes. Administers and monitors oxygen therapy and utilizes intensive pulmonary care techniques
  • Operates and monitors the performance of sophisticated equipment used in the care of complicated obstetrical patients, including, but not limited to, electronic fetal monitors, EKG machines, infant resuscitation equipment, and infant warmers.
  • Interprets and responds to complex technological data generated by such equipment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions in a state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Pre-employment physical required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification required.
  • Sugar Temperature Airway Blood pressure Lab Work and Emotional Support (STABLE) certification required.
  • Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (IFHM) Course certification required.
  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) certification required.
  • Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.) unless exempted by a licensed physician.
  • Employees whose primary clinical responsibilities involve caring for newborn infants, i.e., in critical care, specialty areas such as neonatal intensive care, labor and delivery trained in NRP and adhere to local policy.
  • This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Mother/Infant Care)

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION:: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
